Having been once a B-52 aviator for the USAF, Carl Herberger has gone from protecting his country on the battlefield to protecting his customers in cyberspace. As the Vice President of Security Solutions at Radware, Carl is committed and passionate about security. “I grew up in the US military and my last tour of duty was part of a newly created group created at HQ USAF. This team dedicated to dealing with cybersecurity attack and defense issues located in the Pentagon,” explains Carl. “I’ve always wanted to leave the earth in a better place than I found it. With this pursuit in mind I have taken the helm at Radware and other previous businesses to contribute powerfully to the solution of cybersecurity.”
" Radware has been offering solutions for application availability for over two decades and have a broad family of load balancing products, which monitor the availability of running applications and can adjust their performance. "
Carl’s goal via Radware is to ensure that customer’s applications are up and available, so that users can freely consume their corporate applications. Radware has been offering solutions for application availability for over two decades and have a broad family of load balancing products, which monitor the availability of running applications and can adjust their performance. They also provide seamless redundancy and the ability to rapidly scale up performance at peak usage times. In response to the rapidly changing environments that Radware is witnessing, they are offering solutions in many different flavors for different platforms and with different performance parameters.
Talking about how important it is for organizations to implement sound security solutions for the future, Carl says that organizations will need to invest heavily in algorithms and deeper learning tools (such as AI) in order to do better security and offload the enormous need for people. These deep learning tools will help identify everything from network bottlenecks, to fraud, to malware, malicious bots, DDoS and intrusions. According to the security expert, looking ahead only a couple of years, the main opportunity in AI for cybercriminals is to automate attacks and improve their evasion capabilities for detection systems. “If we believe that today we are already overwhelmed by attacks, wait for cybercriminals to adopt automation and become more effective over time through machine learning algorithms,” adds Carl.
On the evasive side, attackers will leverage machine learning systems such as GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks) to automatically generate malware and attacks that are harder to detect and stop. This technique has already been demonstrated by researchers. “In the first few years ahead we will not have to face new and innovative attack vectors that emerge directly from AI, but a vast volume of attacks that will become more effective, more difficult to detect using traditional detection systems, and will endure until the defenses do come down,” elucidates Carl. “Also at this point in time and for the next couple of years, machine learning and more specifically deep learning can be leveraged for finding new vulnerabilities.” In a world that is becoming more digitized and that is moving to large public clouds where cloud native systems that are being build based on open source software, the platforms running the software will become a primary target for vulnerability scanning. Automation through machine learning and more specifically deep learning will provide an advantage in discovering new vulnerabilities based on source code. Open source provides an easier way to spot vulnerabilities, but deep learning will be more effective at finding vulnerabilities in closed-source software,” adds Carl.
The security specialist is creating defense mechanisms to safeguard organizations around the globe and keep attackers at bay. He believes and follows a prominent saying by Maya Angelou—My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style—a delightful struggle in modern entrepreneurship.
