Scott McQuarrie, CEO, Backstreet Surveillance, has held and worked in any company he owns. He is a multi-faceted man, from a shipping clerk to a tech support agent to normal CEO responsibilities. “This is intentional, as a CEO you must have your finger on the pulse of the company, and you must understand each roles challenges and process structure. For example, as a shipping clerk for several weeks I developed an understanding of the tasks and time frames required for each task,” explains Scott. “With that understanding I can then develop a workflow and structure that addresses the challenges of the position. Once the policies and workflow structure has been developed and tested it’s time to turn the position over to a permanent employee, then on to the next position.” While this process is time-consuming, it is invaluable for me to understand the challenges of each department and the resources that should be assigned to complete the responsibilities of each position.
"Backstreet offers DIY prepackaged kits, free expert system design with custom quotes, and optional nationwide installation services. Backstreet is designed to provide the end-user with the knowledge and expertise to install a professional video security system."
The key to Scott’s success is to become proficient with the tasks of every position in the company. “My employees know I do not ask them to perform any task I have not performed many times myself. This builds a sense of respect and team effort,” he says. “We keep the company processes simple, so they are easy to monitor. We select certain vital signs of the company’s operation and then monitor those vital signs daily, keeping our finger on the pulse.”
Scott started in the security industry in 1991 when Honeywell hired him as a commercial security sales rep. After a couple of years of hard work, it became apparent that he did not have the personality to conform to the mind-numbing corporate ladder and blind corporate policies. After a series of successful businesses, Scott envisioned a company that would offer this new CCTV technology nationwide using this new, untested marketplace called the internet. It was an instant success selling DIY security kits to end-users, homeowners, business owners, and corporate America. In 2010 this company was sold to an investment group that hired a retired Honeywell CEO to take the helm and grow the business. “After a noncompete period I was free to enter the marketplace once again. Backstreet Surveillance is my latest venture, again using the same business model as the last company but adapting to the changes in technology.”
Since he entered the security industry, Scott has built and sold four companies. Held secret and top-secret clearances, designed and managed the installations for Airports, Embassies, Nuclear Power Plants, all types of government agencies, and tens of thousands of home and small businesses. To date, his companies have sold over $130 million in DIY security systems nationwide generated by internet marketing and currently service over 30,000 customers and systems nationwide.

Backstreet offers DIY prepackaged kits, free expert system design with custom quotes, and optional nationwide installation services. Backstreet is designed to provide the end-user with the knowledge and expertise to install a professional video security system. To boil it down to simple terms, they provide the brains, and the customer provides the brawn. Many homeowners possess the skills to run cable and install devices but lack the expertise to design a system or select the right equipment. Consider the small business owner or a company’s IT departments. Often, they possess the resources to perform the installation but again need the expertise of a Pro for the technical aspects. This is Backstreet’s market; they provide design and technical expertise for the owner or end-user.
“Our focus for 2022 is expanding our installation service. From over 30 years of experience and the right management team we have been able to refine installation services. Even the big players wont tackle, such a challenge as pre-priced installation packages,” says Scott. “Expansion into the Business and Government markets are expected to be considerable this year with our new Cyber-Secure series which meets NDAA requirements and assures true cyber security.” IE
