An important rule for Roy Morgan, General Manager of Eagle Medical, to culminate into a successful leader is to stay curious, lookout for new spaces, new ideas, and out of the way, areas to stimulate those solutions. For Roy, persistence, and knowing when enough is enough has made him a pioneering leader. “A relentless drive to push toward your entrepreneurial goals is an absolute requirement to achieving your goals, the more difficult part is knowing when your goal is no longer viable,” he explains. “The real wisdom of being a long-term entrepreneur is how you arrive at those intersections and what you take away from them. And if you stay open and curious, can lead you in new directions that may prove fruitful.” These qualities have taken Eagle Medical to new heights today.
Eagle Medical was born out of the necessity to support the medical device industry on California’s Central Coast. Over the years, Eagle has evolved from basic packaging and sterilization to providing more complex design services and early-stage testing services to our client base. They are continually looking at ways to provide the device industry with better, more complete packaging and sterilization services that are cost-effective to our client base.
"Eagle Medical can provide a wealth of information useful in determining which sterilization method is best for a product."
Eagle Medical can provide a wealth of information useful in determining which sterilization method is best for a product. It comes from their 25+ year history, where they have witnessed numerous advances and challenges within the sterilization/product realization process. Through those experiences, they understand that some pathways are more assured and faster than others. “We currently provide this in the early stages of project planning work with our clients, as they consider their options in bringing their products to market,” says Roy. “At Eagle, we are able to give our customers insights into how current technology and emerging packaging trends can affect a product(s) trajectory within the marketspace through scale-up.” This gives customers an edge over competitors in the early stages of product development/realization that yields are continuing dividends by avoiding costly missteps early in the project life-cycle.
Eagle is constantly vigilant concerning global regulation of sterilization and medical product realization. As an ISO13485 / 14937 accredited service provider to the medical device space, they must be prepared to offer customers the latest information regarding sterilization to avoid costly mistakes in missing crucial steps or processes. An orthopedic implant client recently came to Eagle with a rapid design need for a complete instrumentation kit for knee surgical applications. The kit consisted of over a dozen parts, all of which required retention and presentation order at sterile transfer in the surgical field. Eagle met this challenge with the experience of many such instrumentation kits and some outside the box thinking to provide both retention and presentation capability of those small but crucial components such as small fixation screws. Eagle assisted in design consultation, selecting materials, dimensional analysis, prototype testing, and initial Pilot run work to prove the challenging multi-part design for our client. All while keeping the costs within budget and completing the overall effort in less than seven months.
As Eagle looks to the future, they see strong evidence that Additive Manufacturing (AM) will play a much larger role in the evolution of medical devices and are looking to partner with their AM supply partners to understand better the processing-specific needs AM manufactured devices. Also, as packaging environmental footprints come under greater scrutiny globally, Eagle is looking to increase its use of recyclable materials, improve its design capabilities to reduce total material quantities and components, and utilize processing technologies that help reduce our overall carbon footprint. “For 2021, we are setting our sights on several new initiatives capturing these ideas that should improve our competitiveness with off-shoring and give our customers a real option within the U.S. for intermediate to high-volume production,” says Roy.
