“Supporting Women Through their Personal & Professional Journeys”

As Executive Vice President, chief corporate services & consumer lending officer at Provident Bank, Josephine Moran has always felt she was in the human business, not the numbers business. “Our engagement and the work we do with employees and clients changes peoples’ lives,” she explains. Josephine’s leadership style and management philosophy consists of a combination of transformational, visionary, and servant, providing clear and concise communication, maintaining a people-first mindset, learning from her teams as much as they may learn from her, and driving progress and ushering in change by inspiring employees. “With the assistance of my team and tremendous peers and partners, we’ve implemented changes based on the feedback that are intended to create an even better experience for both team members and customers.” Collaboration is a key part of Provident’s strategic values and has proven to be extremely effective in the organization's growth.

According to Josephine, inspiring and empowering women is the responsibility of leaders at every level, especially other women leaders. “Because I have been supported throughout my career, it is very important for me to support and provide opportunities to other women,” she says. “There are several ways I do this. LinkedIn is a professional tool I utilize very often and have a large number of contacts that I am proud to have gathered through my experiences. People reach out often and I make sure that I respond to every single person. If I am able to assist them in some way, I will. I make myself approachable and available.” “I have participated in many professional panels, mostly dedicated to women professionals, and share my insight and personal experience and network and encourage women to attend.”

To provide mentoring, networking, and internship opportunities, Josephine co-founded the Women’s Leadership Council at the University of New Haven—her alma mater, with a mission of supporting women studies in their personal and professional journeys, ensuring they have the tools - both technical and soft, to be successful. She believes in reaching out to young women early, so they are aware of opportunities in the finance arena and consider the benefits of a finance career. “My advice is to always bring your true self to every situation and my hope is, by example, I encourage other women to do the same,” she adds. “Take ownership of your development and growth, and ensure that those around you always give back - as you will be rewarded tremendously if you do.”

Provident Bank and its leadership are very committed to the growth and development of its employees, both personally and professionally. One of their key programs is ProvidentWomen, an initiative whose mission is to provide the resources to allow each employee the opportunity to grow personally and professionally through educational programs and networking events. Within ProvidentWomen, they introduced the Leadership Development Program for Early Leaders, an initiative for the cultivation, enhancement, and exposure of their emerging leaders. The initiative includes education, seminars, mentorship, and feedback and has been extremely well received.

“Our future plans include the introduction of an employee engagement program across all levels that focuses on diversity, inclusion and culture. Our “CEO Circle” is an initiative that recognizes high potential employees and affords them exposure and access to our CEO,” says Josephine. Provident Bank is always looking to improve its product set and the technologies available to serve customers best. As they continue to embrace the digital experience, there are some encouraging opportunities on the horizon. “In my role, I see many opportunities to expand our services for small businesses in our community. It’s a very exciting time for us, and we are encouraged by the opportunities to expand our relationships in the near-term,” says Josephine. “With our merger, we have an expanded presence in NJ, now the 3rd largest bank, while continuing to serve our customers in PA. In addition, we are now able to service the New York community.” IE
